Double Eagles

Animals and their intelligence
Double Eagles
There is nothing like living within walking distance of the beach where bald eagles hang out.  I have been trying to get a picture of them and they don’t seem to mind me walking around them, but as soon as I pull up the camera they bust.  I guess they don’t like to be shot at even with a camera.

Later that morning we decided to climb Old Woman, which is the last mountain we climbed before we left last year.  I left my camera at home because I had neglected to charge the battery before we left, but we’ll get to that later.

This year when we arrived the mountains were still covered in snow, but we didn’t let that stop us from climbing.  This was the first time I have ever gone uphill against snow for more than a mile or so.  Though the mountain is probably the easiest to climb on the island the snow on top of it crushed my dreams of ever climbing Mt. Everest. To be honest I never had any desire to climb Everest in the first place, but I now know for sure the people that tackle it must be unstable.

To add to our fun the mountain we fogged in which cut our visibility drastically, but we could still see the trail.  When we reached the top my wife spotted the Alaskan equivalent to the ringed-neck known as the Ptarmigan, which also happens to be the state bird.

Luckily my wife had her camera ready.

She is Always Prepared
I couldn’t believe how close I could get to them especially considering they were in no cover at all.  This was probably due to my lack of a firearm.  However I was finally able to bust one so I could watch it fly down the mountain and out of sight.
The Ptarmigan
Our Hero

With the bird gone we examined this shrine to someone who passed away a few years ago. I was at this time our friend the ptarmigan returned from out of nowhere to buzz my poor wife.

She was not amused.
